The Hague

The Medical Center The Hague is a neighborhood initiative. In the existing building of Cardia a renovation has been completed in which several activities are combined in order to achieve more functional synergy. Elderly housing, a psychogeriatric department, administrative offices and a restaurant are part of the overall renovation.

The central communal space connecting the different public functions is a ‘plaza’ where people, young and old can meet.

The Medical Center consists out of two general practices, spaces for physiotherapy, a research lab and a dental practice.
On the first floor administrative offices for the board of Cardia are designed. All separation walls are made of glass. One of the main requirements of the client was to increase the feeling of one big ‘room’ where everyone is working together.

The central plaza is in open connection to the different adjacent spaces.

The project has been established in close cooperation with all the different users. A clear set of requirements was not available at the start of the project. Instead the program developed during talks with the different user groups translating their ideas into drawings, and into an integral spatial and technical design.

Organizing this process in a construction team the design was translated into working drawings quickly enough and was met with the tight time schedule of the client.
