WHO Main Building Extension Geneva

WHO Extension Main Building Geneva

To underline the important role the World Health Organization in Geneva plays and has to play in future the extension to the Main Building has to express the mission of WHO: Being a fit, up2date and transparent organisation for years to come. Our proposal has a twofolded scope:

  1. Economic use of means & resources (building shape, location, functional & sustainable character), and at the same time;
  2. Making a new & inspiring working place which makes a strong social statement: close-knit organized spaces where people can come & work together unitedly.

To maintain as much as possible all the existing qualities of the WHO site (including the Main Building, park and vista’s) the extension is made on the north-east side of the Main Building in the form of a oblate spheriod.

By doing this the footprint of the building is brought back to a minimum and the ratio between floor area and façade surface is optimized radically.

World Health Organization

Program: Office spaces, restaurant, conference areas, SHOC-room, archives and parking spaces
Client: World Health Organization Geneva
Status: first round competition entry
GFA: 11000m2
Design team: Winfried van Zeeland, Pascalle Asgerali

All spaces are close-knit with maximum connection between all the different parts of the program. In this way the building supports the sharing of knowledge developed at the WHO and also stimulates teamworking. And a working environment that is very adaptive and flexible to different kind of use.

The transparency of the design reflects the way the WHO wants to work: See & Be Seen.
